Are you sure you guys aren't using something like the ApplicationMenu INIT
that was just recently posted to comp.binaries.mac? It allows you to select
a key to cause (almost) the described behavior.

Neither shift nor option do anything to change the Apple menu on my system
(running 6.0.5).
