For some time, I've felt a real deficiency of the Mac is the need to open a document to see what's in it. My solution would be to extent the standard open to include a pane showing the first page (or whatever, depending on document type) of the currently selected document. For a folder, the pane would show the list of items inside (if you've seen Smalltalk, maybe this will sound a bit familar). The problem with all this is it would require patching all existing applications before it became reasonably useful. However, imagine this: making posted notes visible when a document is selected in Open. Maybe a simple prototype could be done, which patched SFgetfile, and displayed the finder Info ("Get Info") in a pane below the file list. Anyone keen to do this?
