Keywords: Laserwriter fonts Palatino bitmap Message-ID: <1298@nisca.ircc.ohio-state.edu> Date: 3 May 90 20:30:58 GMT Sender: news@nisca.ircc.ohio-state.edu Organization: Ohio State Univ CTE Lines: 36 I just ran across an interesting problem that I was able to fix, but I'd like to know a little more about what was going on. We have a Mac II connected to a Tektronix color printer as well as to a network with a Laserwriter II/NTX. When we got a recent upgrade to the Tektronix printer driver, they sent along large sizes of the bitmap fonts for Avant Garde, Palatino, and other Laserwriter fonts. The Tektronix is a bitmap printer (300 dpi) and needs the large bitmap fonts to produce crisp images. When we installed the larger sizes, Palatino stopped working with the Laserwriter. The printing dialog would say that it was downloading a copy of the screen font to the printer because it thought that Palatino wasn't on the Laserwriter. This results in weird spacing or failed print jobs. This is with Laserwriter driver version 5.2 by the way After a little investigation, I found out that: 1) The original Laserwriter fonts by themselves work fine. 2) Installing the original Laserwriter fonts and then the Tektronix large sizes makes the Mac think that Palatino is not a resident font in the Laserwriter. 3) Installing the Tektronix large sizes, then the original Laserwriter fonts solves the problem. We get the large fonts and are still able to print in Palatino on the Laserwriter. Obviously there is something in the FOND or FONT that identifies the font as resident in the Laserwriter (or perhaps the Font/DA mover is twiddling something else in there). My question is how this information is stored. How does the Mac determine that a particular font should be downloaded to the Laserwriter because it is not resident on the Laserwriter? James
