You need to tell NetInfo about the change. Type "groups" to see what groups NetInfo thinks you are in. If it doesn't show wheel, use the nidump and niload commands to add the information. If you /etc/groups file is correct, you should be able to type niload groups / < /etc/groups and NetInfo will be updated.
