Take a look at TechMail from MIT.  It's a free (as long as you don't
resell it) Mac POP3 client.  The Mac's retrieve their mail from a Unix
workstation running the POP server (several are available) and send
outgoing messages to a (usually local) "mail hub" via SMTP for delivery.

You can get TechMail via anonymous ftp from net-dist.mit.edu in the
pub/TechMail directory ..
