I've been looking for that sort of beast also, the best that I've
found is VOGEL.  On uunet:

The problems are that the code isn't quite gl and VOGEL isn't a really
friendly X client (it creates a window that the window manager can't
control).   Talk to your SGI salesmen about gl and X in Irix 3.[34].
