How about something much easier? Why not just rap on the noggins of those who wrote the spooler in the first place to make it more friendly? I find it pretty darn easy to find good places to give up cpu time, even with code I didn't write. Don't get me wrong; when (someday) the Mac does preemption, I won't complain. But I hardly think it is _only_ way to achieve smooth multitasking. For the spooler situation, I'd rather we had smarter printers with hard disks (and Virtual memory!) or extended file servers (a definite option today) than waste some resources on my personal machine. -- | _ /| | Robert Minich | | \'o.O' | Oklahoma State University | | =(___)= | minich@a.cs.okstate.edu | | U | - Bill sez "Ackphtth" |
