When you consider the vast amount of noise on Usenet that's defended in the name of free speech, you might also consider that what Prentice-Hall is doing may ultimately have some direct benefit to a significant segment of Usenet readership. Sure, it may increase their profits, but if that allows them to increase payments to their authors, then that too will benefit a segment of the usnet readership.
