Does anyone know of any books on (or other pointers to) the subject? It could be IDL, Interactive Data Language produced by Research Systems, Inc in Boulder. It's a language designed for data / image manipulation and scientific visualization. Arrays and matrices can be treated as single entities as in APL and there's a large library of functions and procedures for things like plotting contours and surfaces, doing FFTs and filters, producing graphics with postscript etc. I used to use IDL when I worked for the Pioneer Venus group in Boulder and I have a friend who works at the company.
