It's low cost, but effective for an NNTP news feed, mail and the occasion FTP. We have configured the modems (T2500's in V.32 mode) to auto-dial our private phone number on DTR. Every ten minutes we run a script which tests if the link is alive. If not we turn it off and on again. This drops the line and redials it. Works fairly reliably, and the cost is low.
