This happened to me too. No idea why. I just copied /etc/passwd from another machine and rebooted. /etc/group was screwed up also. In common with ccs.carleton.ca, I don't think that I was doing anything wrong at the time. I just put it down to cosmic ray trouble and the fact that when your OS is larger than 256K you never know if it really works :) (Using SR10.1).
