I'm tearing apart a 100B Rainbow to clean it and was wondering > what function the following board has: > On side 2 of the board, there's a label that says "LPWR > (digital) GS-2" Sounds like the GRAPHICS board. Is it the large board on the left front of the machine (as view from the front)? - --- Opus-CBCS 1.12 * Origin: The Unknown Opus (1:116/31.0) ------------------------------ Date: 05-31-90 To: GEORGE THEALL Subject: DEC BOARD From: PAUL OLSON Ollie, I believe the board is the color graphics add-on board from DEC. The NEC 7220 is the processor chip (if I remember correctly). Also, if the board was connected at the front of the mother board (the comm ports located at the back of the mother board), then it is the graphics option. . The graphics option will give you 16 shades of grey on a monochrome monitor, or up to 4096 colors (16 displayable maximum) on a color monitor. Lately, I have been receiving calls from people who buy a color monitor and the color graphics option thinking that they can change the screen colors of their alphanumeric text. Keep in mind that this is not the case. The alphanu subsystem and the graphics subsystems are completely separate on the Rainbow. The Rainbow is set up similarly to some of the earlier graphics workstations and display devices which used separate graphics memory for the graphics display. . If you have any more questions, just ask. The Vax > has VMODEM, which uses the CPMUG (Christensen) file transfer protocol. VMODEM is a new one on me; check with your VAX manager to get the correct designation (probably XMODEM). The various comm programs for the Rainbow are available from the International Rainbow Users Group. - --- Opus-CBCS 1.12 * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Md. - 301-622-2247 (1:109/123.0) ------------------------------ Date: 05-31-90 To: GEORGE THEALL Subject: RE: WINDOWS V3.0 From: FRANK MALLORY > From: OBRIEN%OBRIEN@venus.ycc.yale.edu > > There's life in the old Rainbow yet! > > First of all, if you have any PC-type machinery, you ought to check > out Windows 3.0 - it's nothing short of amazing! With However, local users are reporting that it is a real resource hog, occupying 6MB on your HD, taking lots of memory, and running slowly even on fast 386 machines. So I have a wait-and-see attitude as to whether it is really going to be a feasible proposition for the Rainbow. And I think it goes without saying that you will need the TURBOW board to make it usable at all. - --- Opus-CBCS 1.12 * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Md. - 301-622-2247 (1:109/123.0) ------------------------------ Date: 05-31-90 To: DENNIS PERRY Subject: RE: CODE BLUE AND 100A From: FRANK MALLORY > version 2.01 of CB I purchased from Suitable Solutions. > Do these problems exist with a 100B. Where can I get > a 100B mother board and how much should one expect to pay > for such a beast? Thanks. I've seen 100B motherboards advertised for $95 in Computer HotLine. But I recommend you put out a few bucks more and buy a complete 100B for $150. This will give you the more potent B power supply as well as a spare monitor and keyboard and possiblly more memory. The moderator will jump on me if I mention the names of any vendors here; but if you put the question to me on this BBS, I will be glad to furnish it. - --- Opus-CBCS 1.12 * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Md. - 301-622-2247 (1:109/123.0) ------------------------------ Date: 05-31-90 To: VAN VANHORN Subject: RE: CORRUPTED ARC FILES From: FRANK MALLORY > A user here pointed out that BLACKBOX.ARC and RBGIF.ARC > that were available in my Rainbow download area were corrupted. > I scanned them with PKXARC -T and found that to be the > case. Could anyone send them over here, or let me know I seem to recall that there was an error in the archive for RBGIF that didn't actually affect the validity of any of its files. All you need to do in that case is rezip it. If you cant fix it that way, RBGIF.ZIP is FReqable from 109/417 at HST speed.
