If it is on a 8088/8086 then windows will start up in the real mode. It will start up in protected and enhanced modes depending on 286 or 386 and how much memory you have. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Check out PC Weeks dedicated section to windows 3.0 that came out a couple weeks back.
