My Trash can and floppy disk icons keep disappearing under the carpet.

If a window from one of my applications covers the Trash Can or my 
HD icon or floppy disk icon (I'm running under multi-finder) and then I
move the window out of the way, the icons are gone!  

They stay invisible even if I quit the application, or click back to the 
finder. 

The items are still there of course, I just click around in the area and
the icon pops up again, but it's a pain going fishing all the time.
