You have get keep up with the computer's production level, or at least not fall too far behind. To do this you have to conquer new cities faster because the computer builds faster than you do. Don't worry about his battleships and carriers. Use destroyers to find those and subs. Lure the big ships away from your supply lanes. Build a few bombers early because you never know when the computer will get lucky and colonize a strategic city. In the middle game, you can probably use your bombers to take out groups of his ships. (It is really fun to suck in several batlleships and carriers with one of yours ships and then nuke the whole group. You can usually even save your ship.)
