(But if any genius comes up with one, I'd *love* to hear about it, as my boss has the same trouble with NCSA Telnet on his Portable!) Network connections are kept alive by both ends sending each other data at periodic intervals. Even when they haven't actually got anything to say to each other, they still exchange "Are you there/yes I am"-type messages. The formats and contents of the messages depend on the particular network protocols involved (and there are lots of them). So there's no easy way you could delegate the function of exchanging them to some chip that keeps running while the rest of the machine goes to sleep.
