(I tried contacting the author of xperfmon, Thomas A. Bagli [tom@meepmeep.pcs.com], to no avail). When we try to invoke xperfmon, we get the message "vmstat: Disk init info not in namelist". After a little tracking, it appears this is occurring because the symbol _mbdinit is not present in the kernel on our Sun 4c's (but IS present on our Sun 4/280, where xperfmon runs without incident). The symbol _fdinit IS present on the SPARCstations (and not on the 4/280), but I'm not enough of a kernel hacker to know if the two symbols (_mbdinit and _fdinit) are related. Can anyone help us? We're using the MIT R4 vanilla server (patched through fix-11) on Sun SPARCstation 1s running SunOS 4.0.3c. We're all diskful clients (i.e. root and swap only on a local SCSI, everything else via an NFS server), and we're using the xperfmon that came on the R4 tape. -- --- Douglas H.
