Most of the contrib clients were sent to MIT as R3 clients. Things changed in R4. In particular some MIT header files were placed in subdirectories below /usr/include/X11. Your best bet is to ftp new R4 versions of the contrib clients from expo.lcs.mit.edu. Most of the contrib clients with problems have been updated and the new sources are on that machine. In particular, xlock was taking advantage of a bug in the R3 intrinsics, that's why it worked for R3 and is broken for R4.
