I hate to tell you this but - motels/hotels have rooms for handicapped customers. I have availed myself of their use many times. Usually the bathroom is the major difference - some have roll in showers for wheelchair accessibility, some have hooks in the ceiling for a trapeze (hmmmmmm, sounds kinky to me - hee hee), wider doors, easier access to the beds etc, etc. AND they are on the first floor for obvious reasons (including ease of escape incase of fire). If you call some local ones and ask them if they have special rooms most of them will probably say yes... Actually, I would be surprised if they said no.
