X! Apparently, the Brekkians have neglected to inform the Ornarans that the

X! to a bogus cure.

X! Picard, citing the Prime Directive, refuses to inform the Ornarans that the
X! Brekkians have been deceiving them for 200 years.
X! Instead, he cleverly turns
X! the tables on the Brekkians by withdrawing an earlier offer to repair the
X! Ornaran freighter ship.
X! In this way, the Ornarans will be unable to honor
X! their trade agreement and will consequently escape their addiction.

X! The intense solar flares prevent a tractor beam,
X! or any positive transporter lock.
X! Using the power of both transporters, Yar manages to beam over the ship's
X! \f3cargo\f1, which they put in the chamber first.

X! Strangely, the four do not exhibit any sadness
X! over their comrades, but insist on seeing their cargo.

X! When they see it, it becomes clear that there are two factions here,
X! each insisting the cargo belongs to them.
X! They fight, using their own natural electric charge (``a difficult
X! weapon to confiscate'', as Yar observes) until broken up by Security.
X! Picard meets with all four, where the two Ornarans, T'Jon and Romas, say
X! that the cargo, a shipment of Felissium, is a medicine for a plague on Ornara.
X! The two Brekkians, Sobi and Langor, acknowledge this, but claim they
X! can't simply give it away without being paid for it.

X! Beverly examines all four, and discovers that although T'Jon and Romas show many
X! symptoms of a disease, she can't find any cause.
X! When Picard manages to convince Sobi and Langor to at least give T'Jon
X! and Romas enough Felissium for 
X! their own personal needs, she finds the answer she was looking for:
X! it used to be a medicine, but it cured the plague two hundred years ago,
X! shortly after it was first used.
X! Now, it is merely a very addictive narcotic.
X! 
X! Upon further investigation, Picard discovers that the Brekkians know that 
X! Felissium is no more than a drug, but the Ornarans do not.
X! Furthermore, this 
X! relationship, with Felissium being Brekka's only industry, is long-standing, and
X! Picard cannot change it without breaking the Prime Directive.
X! He allows the Brekkians their ``change of heart'' when they decide
X! simply to give the Ornarans this shipment,
X! but invokes the Prime Directive again and refuses to repair the 
X! Ornarans' two remaining ships, thus condemning the two planets to temporary 
X! isolation from each other.
X! The four leave, all angry at Picard (though for different reasons),
X! and the Enterprise heads for the Opraline system.

X! programs it for Paris as it was twenty-two years ago, where he sits at a table 
X! where he once had a rendezvous, but never showed up.

X! As the Enterprise arrives at the coordinates given, they find a relay signal,
X! sending them to Vandor Four, a small planetoid orbiting a double star:

X! transporters, and both Manheims are beamed aboard.

X! and they are lucky to make it back to the Enterprise at all.

X! After Dr. Manheim awakens, he claims to be partially trapped in another
X  dimension.
X! When he hears what has happened, he insists that his experiment must have
X! a controlled shutdown, to close the rift he has opened.

X! the least affected by the time distortion.
X! Despite one security precaution
X! that Dr. Manheim forgot to mention, Data makes it into the lab.

X! He prepares to drop a specific amount of antimatter into the rift precisely
X! 27 seconds after the next effect begins.

X! as Picard beams down to join the other admirals, Quinn attacks Riker,
X! rendering him unconscious.

X! Admiral Quinn, they discover that a parasitic being has invaded Quinn's
X! body and it is controlling all of his brain functions.  When Riker regains

X! controlled beings.

X! At the dinner, Riker realizes that the Starfleet command is controlled by the
X! parasites.  He and Picard are able to kill the parasitic-infested admirals,
X! as well as the species' mother creature.  However, Data later discovers that
X! the mother creature sent a homing beacon to an unexplored region of our
X! galaxy before being destroyed...

X! the debris, Worf concludes it can only be the Horatio, totally destroyed.

X! Riker is skeptical, but becomes less so when Data comes in with

X! particularly in the command areas'', which Data

X! Now quite disturbed, Picard orders the Enterprise back to Earth to
X! check things out, and informs the rest of the crew about his suspicions.

X! When they arrive, the response seems quite temperate.
X! Two admirals, Savar and Aaron, invite Picard and Riker down to dinner.
X! The third, Gregory Quinn, asks to come up to the ship.
X! When he arrives, he denies most of what he said back
X! at Relva 7, making Picard certain he's been affected.
X! Picard beams down, and Riker sees Quinn to his quarters.
X! Quinn attacks Riker, showing incredible strength and near-invulnerability.
X! He knocks Riker out, and even Worf shortly
X! afterwards, before Beverly knocks him out with repeated phaser blasts.
X! She examines him, and finds a parasitic creature has taken him over.

X! She informs Picard about this, who's suspicious enough already from the

X! now revived and are understandably confused.
X! One of them, Ralph Offenhaus, a financier, is overbearing to the extreme,
X! and insists on contacting his lawyer immediately.
X! As all three acclimate, Troi briefs Picard, saying that although
X! the Romulans are arrogant, they will not initiate the conflict, but rather will
X! counterpunch.

X! After a brief, brusque conversation between Picard and Ralph, in which Picard
X! informs Ralph of just how much has changed in the past 370 years, Clare, one
X! of the other 20th century people, starts crying over her sons.
X! Picard sends Troi in to comfort her,
X! and Troi starts helping Clare find out what happened to her children.
X! The third person, Sonny Clemens, a singer, has befriended Data
X! by now, but as he suggests starting a party, Data is called back to the bridge,
X! as they're about to enter the Neutral Zone.

X! They find that not only has the first outpost they find been destroyed, but it's
X! as though it's been completely scooped out.
X! The second outpost is gone as
X! well, and Picard takes the ship to Yellow Alert (over the objections of Riker
X! and Worf, who prefer Red Alert).
X! Ralph, meanwhile, tired of not knowing what's
X! going on, heads for the main bridge.
X! On the bridge, Worf detects a disturbance, but there's no real lock.
X! Picard does not fire, and the disturbance vanishes.
X! As Ralph makes his presence known, the Romulans return and decloak.

X! Picard opens hailing frequencies, and finds that outposts on the Romulan side
X! of the zone have disappeared as well, in precisely the same manner.
X! He offers an ongoing exchange of Federation on this one issue.
X! The Romulans agree, but 
X! ``only if it is convenient, and appropriate, at the time.''
X! They leave, after
X! Commander T-Bok tells Picard in no uncertain terms that the Romulans are back.
X! Shortly afterward, the Enterprise rendezvouses with the U.S.S. Charleston,

X! Tog approaches Lwaxana for two reasons: he thinks her telepathy could prove
X! very useful in his business dealings, and he's very attracted to her.
X! She recoils in horror, and tells him to go away.

X! Lwaxana's been trying to encourage Deanna to settle down and have a family,
X! but she thinks her family is her friends on the Enterprise.
X! But, be that as it may, she and Riker both take some shore leave on Betazed,
X! as the Enterprise warps out to examine a nearby nebula.
X! This study, by the way, will be Wesley's last mission on board the Enterprise:
X! when they return to Betazed,
X! he's going to hop a shuttle to take his oral exams for entrance to the Academy.
X! As you might expect, Tog shows up and kidnaps Lwaxana,
X! who \f2accidentally\f1 joined Deanna and Will on the picnic.
X! He takes Deanna and Riker as well.
X! 
X! Most of what follows can be summed up quickly.
X! Lwaxana lures Tog into a state of relaxation by...er...stroking his ears,
X! among other things.
X! Riker uses one of the other crewmember's annoyance at losing to Riker
X! in 3-D chess to con his way out of the cell,
X! and rigs the warp engines to modulate the subspace static
X! into a pattern the Enterprise will recognize.
X! By this time, the Ferengi CMO has caught on to what Lwaxana is doing,
X! and is brutally examining her with their mind-probe.
X! The Enterprise, having returned to Betazed after their study
X! (and, by the way, the nebula was giving off interference,
X! cutting their communications off) and discovered what happened,
X! catch on to Riker's subspace static, but as a result of staying behind to help,
X! Wesley misses the shuttle\-and thus, his chance at the Academy this year.
X! 
X! They eventually find the Ferengi ship Creighton, but things have changed
X! by the time they arrive.
X! Lwaxana has made a deal for Deanna and Will's safety;
X! if Tog lets them go, she'll remain behind willingly.
X! Deanna and Will return, and Picard,
X! by pretending to be a jealous lover of Lwaxana's, scares Tog into
X! giving Lwaxana back.
X! All is well.
X! Finally, saying that ``although the Academy must wait for you,
X! I can no longer in good conscience make you wait for the Academy,''
X! Picard gives Wesley a field promotion to full Ensign, complete with
X! all its rights and responsibilities (like a nice red uniform).
