To gain entrance, you must lure a band of skeletons (beholders won't work, since they don't touch the floor) onto the plate, then activate a 'freeze life' spell (found in the green and blue magic boxes). You can then enter the chamber, and collect the paltry items it contains (I think there was a drumstick, an apple, and a potion).
