The same effect can be achieved by changing the cursor to something less conspicuous (don't ask me how on the Mac -- it's easy in X) and then drawing a cursor and moving it. Of course, this could confuse the user just the same. It just avoids the problems that people have mentioned with actually moving the mouse pointer.
