A good overview article "The Light at the End of the LAN" is in the
July 1989 issue of BYTE magazine.  In five pages it covers the evolution
of FDDI and compares it to Ethernet and Token Ring LANs.  It refers to
the OSI model, describes the DAS and SAS topology, covers the benifits 
of fiber, and explains group encoding.
