A simple solution (if possible) for your phone problem is to
wire your house phones such that the phone line first goes to your
modem and then to the rest of the house phones.  That way, if you want to
make sure that you are not kicked off of the phone line, just unplug
the phone cord that is going to the rest of the house and no one would
be able to pick up when you are on the modem.
