Red: 0..max
Green: 0..max then max..0 (over same range)
Blue: max..0

which doesn't cut it.  (I have a spectrum that seems to approximate the
mapping where the green seems to fluctuate unexpectedly.)  Ideally the
mapping would  have constant intensity for every element (i.e. for all
entries R+G+B elements = constant).

Please email responses; I will summarize if there is sufficient interest.
