    for helping me see the (what should have been) obvious.  BTW, my
compiler accepts:

int foo( int, ... );

    but  rejects:

int foo(...);

    and calls the ... a syntax error.  Anyone: is the above declaration
ANSI, or K&R, or none of the above?
