This is valid C code, [Michael,] complain to your compiler vendor.

Yes, this is specific to the UofT version; people that have it should be
careful to distinguish between the problems of BIND and the problems
of the changes to it.  I'm sure Jim can do without the distraction and
it is better for N people to do 1 check rather than Jim to do N checks.
