I think you will find that the DC-DC converter is bad. It provides the +12 and -12 volts DC that the printer uses to communicate with the computer. If you have a multimeter it is a simple matter to test it. 1) Flip the LA-50 over on to it's back with the switches on the front facing you. With the bottom panel removed, use a ruler to locate the converter. The mounting pin is located 4 3/16" from the left edge of the board and 11/32" from the top (rear of LA-50). You should see a single pin sitting by itself. You are interested in the 4 pins below it. |<-------------4 3/16--------------> 11/32 ^ | o v | | o o o o | / | | \ | / | | \ | -12 +12 +5 GND 2) Hook up the cables to the LA-50 and check to see if you get the proper voltages. If so, the problem is elseware. If not, now comes the fun part. I found it impossible to find a direct replacement that would mount to the board where the old one came off. I settled for another brand and soldered short leads on it to make the connection. Not very pretty but it has worked for about 6 months without any problem. If you want to try to find a direct replacement, mine was a FUJIKEN, part# A12C10AC. If not, you should be able to find one at a large electronic supply house. Get one that is made for powering RS-232 ports with a +5 volt input and +12 and -12 volt outputs. A friend found mine in a junk bin where he works. If you have any questions, leave me a message and I will try to help. Tom - --- * Origin: WayStar BBS (Opus 1:322/14) ------------------------------
