For example, when I inport text files between programs, I find SEDT helps me find and erase control characters that don't show up using the program, but do effect the program's operation. Recopy both the text and program files. 2. Using the flopies and the hard drive, CREATE a new document from the original file. 3. Using the original flopies and the RDCPM program, copy the CPM files to MS-DOS. FREESTYLE will automaticly change the document so it can be used with FREESTYLE. It will also make ASCII files. 4. Using the original flopies and the RDCPM program. copy the CPM files to MS-DOS. Edit out the control characters using SEDT and re-edit using WordPerfect or another word processor. Good luck. SS used to sell a cache program, but of course they seem to have moved on. If anyone has information, please let me know. This would be used on my BBS, to speed up processing of mail. But the fly in the ointment is that the coercivity is twice as high as the 48tpi (xxDD) disks, 600 for HD and 300 for the DD. This is an expression of the strength of the magnetic field required to change the orientation of the magnetic media on the disk. While the HD disks have a track density comparable to that of the RX50, the RX50's coercivity is more in line with that of the 48tpi disks. In conversations with Chuck Guzis of SYDEX (author of RainDos, the RX50 formatting, reading & writing utility for use on PC-AT's), I was advised EMPHATICALLY to transfer all data off of HD disks, since the disks were written with a head that did not have enought field strength to overcome the coercivity of the disk. He predicted that there would, over time, be some data dropouts. This was true, as the copy command repeatedly came back with read errors. I have been using no-name, Sony, TDK, Maxell, Fuji and a few other DSDD 48tpi disks. I have over 300 disks in my library. Damn few problems with them, once they were formatted with the "/i" option. I really don't understand what your concerns are about using these disks. Would you feel more secure with REAL RX50's from DEC? - --- * Origin: Long_Island RB (Opus 1:102/138) ------------------------------ Date: 06-28-90 (08:04) To: GEORGE THEALL Subject: RE: WHAT DISKS TO USE - R From: FRANK MALLORY > I want to buy some floppies for use in a Rainbow. Quality and data > integrity are an issue, so I'm not willing to use regular "Double > Density" 48 TPI disks, even though they usually work. However, cost > is also an issue, so I'm willing to format them myself. It comes down to a choice of DS/DD diskettes or ones designed specifically for DEC computers (either RX50, or RX180K if you can find them). I have found the 3M and Memorex DS/DD diskettes to be highly reliable. Maxell is the only brand I can single out as not suitable for use on the 'bow. Generally, it seems that if a diskette passes the format & verify process on the 'bow, it will thereafter operate reliably. DS/HD (HD = High Density) diskettes, designed for the IBM 1.2MB drive, have a coating with a higher coercivity than that of the DS/DD drives; I tried some and found they wouldn't work, but others have reported some success with them. - --- Opus-CBCS 1.12 * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Md. - 301-622-2247 ------------------------------ Date: 06-28-90 (08:26) To: DONALD PHILLIPSON Subject: RE: WP FOR DEC RAINBOW From: FRANK MALLORY Is Sprint a markup language or a WYSIWYG word processor? - --- Opus-CBCS 1.12 * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Md. - 301-622-2247 ------------------------------ Date: 06-28-90 (08:32) To: GEORGE THEALL Subject: RE: SUBJECT: IBM PC FLOPP From: FRANK MALLORY > Is there any software allowing for reading or writing > IBM PC 360K floppies on Rainbow? It seems technically > possible: Rainbow has a higher capacity drives and also > runs MS DOS. It is *not* technically possible to read or write an IBM 360K floppy on the Rainbow, for the simple reason that 360K requires two read/ write heads and the Rainbow has only one. The best you can do is format single-sided on the PC (/1), which when operated in the MEDIACHK ON mode on Rainbow will give you approx. 180KB. - --- Opus-CBCS 1.12 * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Md. - 301-622-2247 ------------------------------ Date: 06-28-90 (08:38) To: GEORGE THEALL Subject: RE: TERMINAL PROGRAM From: FRANK MALLORY > Does anybody have a terminal program for Rainbow?
