Everyone who posted responses seems to have a pretty good grasp of what it takes to get mail into HP Desk. I'm impressed. I would amend the advice given just slightly: John Milburn writes: For an HPDesk address of the form "John Young / hp0000 / 01 ", the easiest way is probably something like: ...!uunet!desk.hp.com!hp0000!01!john_young (Thank goodness that's not John's real electronic mail address.) Since uunet is a fully domain-smart Internet host, that could be rewritten ...!uunet!hpnnnn.desk.hp.com!first_last where "hpnnnn" is the location code of the addressed. The sublocation should be unnecessary. John Milburn writes again: It is a little cleaner as an internet style address: john_young%01%hp0000@desk.hp.com It's even cleaner without the sublocation: first_last@hpnnnn.desk.hp.com This form doesn't rely on mailers understanding "%" addresses. Mark C. Otto writes: Simply send your mail to ...!hplabs!hpXXXX.desk.hp.com!persons_name%YY That's fine, too, but best leave of the "%YY". It's unnecessary and might confuse a less-than-brilliant mailer. And finally, Jim Sadler writes: I tried it and this is what happened: [lotsa bounces at hp-sde.sde.hp.com, my baby, with the nasty error message: 554 ... Service unavailable] Partly my own fault - hp-sde should have recognized "desk.hp.com" as an alias. She now does. An easier address than what Jim used: uunet!desk.hp.com!hp2410!00!mike_flynn@uunet.UU.NET would be uunet!hp2410.desk.hp.com!first_last One last note jim sadler 206-234-9009 email uunet!bcstec!jsadler | hplabs!hpubvwa!b-mrda!jim and one of this days: (root)jsadler@misty.ca.boeing.com "jsadler@misty.boeing.com" looks like a good address to me. It's got MX information, anyway. cricket ________________________________________________________________________________ Cricket Liu Internet: cricket@winnie.corp.hp.com Domain Administrator and Technical UUCP: hplabs!hp-sde!cricket Contact, hp.com Hewlett-Packard Corporate Telnet: 424-3723 Palo Alto, California Phone: (415) 424-3723 ________________________________________________________________________________
