The print quality switch on the IM II is only used when the printer is printing
in "Draft" mode. Draft mode only prints text from the font in the printer,
the switch tells the printer how many passes to take on the line of text.
Tell your father to print in draft and change the switch. 

This is not to be confused with Faster and Best quality which are really
printing graphics.  These modes of printing are completely controlled by the
computer hooked up to the printer, and these are what prints just like to 
Mac screen.
