I tried the same tests with the printer port, and got different answers (I had the wires bound under the table, and couln't quite get to them until now...) That port is working AOK - the modem-to mac info WAS (modem port) -2.2 V / 21mA IS (printer port) -7.5 V / 0.5mA NOW any suggestions what chip to replace (it's a MacPlus)? I figured the modem is OK driving that much current, but I'd rather not let it be... Thanks everybody for your help. Joe
