Not nasty, just an invisible locked file. DiskExpress II puts a file called [DiskExpress Activity Log] (yes, the name includes the []'s) on each volume it monitors (or optimizes?). As I said, the file is locked and invisible. You should be able to remove it using any program or DA that allows you to lock and unlock invisible files (or you could make it visible and then remove it from the Finder).
