Message-ID: <9788@pt.cs.cmu.edu> Date: 2 Jul 90 15:49:57 GMT Organization: Carnegie-Mellon University, CS/RI Lines: 26 I am looking for advice on what machine we should buy. Any and all advice is welcome. Our lab runs on Suns. Occasionally, a user has a big job that takes days to run on the Suns. We need a fast machine for these people to run on. All our applications are different so a special-purpose DSP engine or the like will not do. The machine we are looking for might have specs something like this: 50-60 (Vax 11/780) MIPS 10-20 times Sparc floating point (20 MFLOPS?) 128MB memory Small disk Runs "BSD flavor" Unix Priced to Sell ($50-100K?) Any ideas? Convex? Trace? All replies greatly appreciated -- I have no idea what is available. Bill Ross wross@cs.cmu.edu
