I just changed the genlatex.c code in the dev directory of transfig
to generate thicker lines when possible (horizontal or vertical).

I am also going to change xfig to add sccs code in the files it writes.
I already added that code to fig 1.4.

I'll post patches after I clean up from the coding frenzy.
