xpert is not exactly an appropriate place to be talking about interim
code that has only been released to Consortium members. :-)

    The differences are obviously in the handling of the '\' character.
    Can anyone shed some light on which should be the correct behavior?

The Xlib "spec" for resource file syntax deviates in several key
respects from what the implementation happens to do.  The code you
reference was written according to the spec, which ended up removing
various undocumented features that people no doubt depend on.  As
they are discovered, they will be repaired.
