Yes. We have xdm started from rc.local on lots of machines here. Is there any mechanism for redrawing the screen at certain intervals, or a tool which can be invoked via cron to send a signal to xdm to refresh its screen? Someone posted xdm changes to capture console output, perhaps they'll resend them to you.
