Is there a particular reason that you are using a Motorola part
in an Intel PC? It seems to me that you would save yourself lots
of grief by going Intel. I'm not familiar with the 68230, so 
you probably have good reasons...but I just thought I would ask.
Intel has some 8 bit counter/timers--don't know if they have 16 bit
critters. You might check around.
