Interestingly, other modern Sidewinders are rebuilt older models, the AIM-99N being the -9B/E upgraded to the -9J standard, and the AIM-9P comprising -9B/E/J and new-build missles to the approximate standard of the -9J/L series with smokeless propellant. According to The Encyclopedia of World Airpower, the F-18 is cleared to carry the AIM-120.
