Modern techniques in molecular biology such as the Polymerase Chain Reaction and the use of gene probes, now offer the prospect of developing sensitive and rapid alternative methods. This project, which is funded by MAFF and run in association with the Central Veterinary Laboratory, will provide an excellent opportunity for a post-doctoral worker who wants to expand his/her expertise in this area while also applying this knowledge to a problem of considerable practical significance. The person appointed to this post will join active mycobacterial research groups at Surrey University and CVL and work will be undertaken at both sites. Experience of molecular biology or related fields would be an advantage, but our primary requirement is for enthusiasm and creative ability. The appointment will be for three years on scale RA1A, starting salary up to 12381 pounds (point 4; under review), according to age, experience and qualifications. We would like someone to start as soon as possible. B. Research Assistant PCR detection of Mycobacterial DNA in Crohn's disease A one year post is available to join a group investigating the aetiology of Crohn's disease - a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestinal tract. The work is to investigate mycobacterial involvement in this disease by using DNA probes and the Polymerase Chain Reaction to attempt to detect mycobacterial DNA in microbial cultures and tissue samples from patients with Crohn's disease. Some experience in molecular biology is desirable. Salary is on RA1A scale up to 14169 pounds. The post is available immediately and is for one year; however there are good prospects of renewal. Informal enquiries can be made to (A) Dr J.W.Dale (0483 571281 ext 2653) or (B) Dr J.J.McFadden (ext 2671). Applications (stating which post you are applying for) in the form of a curriculum vitae (3 copies), including the names and addresses of two referees, should be sent to the Personnel Officer, University of Surrey, Guildford, Surrey GU2 5XH, by 10 August.
