Most of those other "civilized countries" are much smaller geographically than the US, so it's not surprising that bookstores are generally much closer (in distance and in travel time) to their distributors. In the US, it's quite possible for a bookstore- in-need to be 3000 miles away from the appropriate warehouse. Even so, it still might be possible to get 24-hour turnaround here.
