In regular gnuemacs this is not possible but in the Epoch system (gnu emacs
extended for X11) this is possible, using color or inversion for arbitrary
regions.  Get epoch from cs.uiuc.edu by anon ftp or send mail to
epoch-request@cs.uiuc.edu to find out about tapes.  Latest version is 3.2
beta.
