This is what RFC 976 talks about and recommends pure ! syntax. Most sites that accept uucp traffic and understand domains will take domain!user as well as user@domain, so the non-ambiguous a!b!c!d!e!u is the safest bet since it doesn't depend on anyone else's interpretation.
