The first meeting of the Toronto Unix Users Group will take place Tuesday, September 11, at 6:45pm in the Burgundy Room of the North York Memorial Centre. This inaugural meeting will be to determine the amount of interest in a Toronto-area group appealing to a wide range of Unix users, administrators, programmers, and those who are just curious about whether Unix is appropriate for them. All are welcome, and there are no admission fees or memberships required to attend. The meeting will be split into three parts. The first will feature a talk by Trevor John Thompson of Mortice Kern Systems, on the similarities and differences between Unix, MS/DOS and OS/2. The second part of the meeting will deal with organizational matters, and offer an open discussion period, for anyone to ask questions of the group at large. The third part of the meeting will be split into Special Interest Groups (SIGs), where attendees can gravitate to an area of specific interest for dealing with problems or discussing industry trends. To date, leaders have been confirmed for the following SIGs: Programming SIG D'Arcy Cain New Users SIG Ted Cowie Communications SIG Georg Nikodym Text/Word Processing SIG Evan Leibovitch Unix Tools SIG Peter Renzland In addition to the SIGs, the group intends to develop a viable Software Library, to allow users to easily obtain publicly-available Unix packages. This effort will be co-ordinated by Richard Greenall, Rick McCalla, and Drew Sullivan. At the present time we are still seeking volunteers to act as: Database SIG leader Graphics/Windows SIG leader Value-Added Reseller SIG leader Speaker co-ordinator The participation of the above individuals is greatly appreciated, as well as Uniforum Canada for its support and financial assistance, and Usenix for its assistance in promotional efforts. This group is intended to become a local affiliate of Uniforum Canada.
