In particular, you'd get the same error running Compaq 3.31 on a Compaq. I believe Norton 4.5 fixes this problem (for both DOS 3.31 and 4.0). To answer the original poster, I've seen Compaq 3.31 running on a Toshiba 386 laptop with no problems (40MB partition).
