TN3270 refers to an implementation of the Telnet protocol in which both parties agree to use the native 3270 byte stream to represent the host and terminal data. The agreement to use 3270 mode is done by standard Telnet option negotiations. A defacto standard exists for this option negotiation, but has never been defined in an RFC, although a proposed replacement has (see RFC 1041; don't know as it has been implemented).
