(fireball, etc does not seem to work either). They can be killed, you just have to keep hitting them. When you get more hit points you can really build up your ninja's by kicking them to death. So far I've never managed to kill anything by yelling at it. Another neat trick is to lead them under a closable door and then close the door on them. They are more susecptible to fireballs when they rear up to bite you.
