Some years ago I bought a used Grid portable for a couple hundred $. In addition to requiring AC power, it also required an IEEE 488 connection to a separate diskette chassis (which required power). And it kicked off a LOT of heat. It probably seemed worse than it was because it used the black metal skin to radiate the heat, but after a while the case was decidedly hot to the touch.
