The problem is that the Icons on the desktop (disks, "most-frequently-used" applications, thrash can ...) are not in the same display layer as the Finder windows, but hidden under all the windows. So when you're in Word (or Kermit, or any other application that uses full-screen windows and does not block the desk top layers as Hypercard does) you cannot get to the thrash can.
