The sockets are for an option ROM and for expansion memory.

My model 100 has both the ROM (a text formatter called WriteROM) and the
expansion RAM chip (for 32k)

In fact, it powers up into BASIC if you power down in Basic. Otherwise it
should return to the Menu. The TEXT,TELCOM,ADDRS,etc. programs all manipulate
strictly ASCII data.
